Classic Inca Trail - Day 3

Pacaymayo - Wiñay Wayna (Long moderate) (B,L,D)

After another early breakfast we will walk to the beautiful Inka site of Runkurakay which is the beginning of the original royal Inca trail to Machu Picchu.

From here we will start a steep ascent towards the second highest pass 3,950m/13,035 feet and continue on to Sayakmarka, one of the most beautiful Inka remains on this trail.

After lunch we continue through some very beautiful scenery, cloud forest where we can observe a large variety of orchids and humming birds. We will walk for another hour to Phuyupatamarca (City in the Clouds) and reach the third highest point on the trail (3,680m). There are also wonderful views of the Salkantay Mountain.

From here we have 3 hours of downhill into the forest and our last campsite. A short distance from this campsite the Inca site Wiñayhuayna (Forever Young) is located. Even if you are tired from walking, don’t miss out on visiting, what is considered, the most impressive Inca site on the trail.

Total walking distance today is 16km (11.5 miles) with altitudes ranging from 2,670mts (8,760feet) to 3,950mts (12,965 feet).
